traces of communication

what remains - performance and lecture for the Salon Ka_Lin organized by Katalin Marghescu. selavy gave an artist lecture explaining aspects of her work and organized a participatory networking performance. we even managed to meet oberon onmura during a brief visit in second life - despite the bad network connection at the Salon.

statement

virtual worlds (VWs) can be used as medium to create art.

this art is real, just as any other art.

not everything created by using a VW is art.

art in a VW is not distinguished from other content by craftsmanship.

when words such as sculpture are used in the context of a VW, they imply a reference to another medium, thus confining the artist in her use of the medium.

the avatar as representation of the artist may be art.

the space of a VW is perceived as a representation of a three-dimensional space.

this perception does not imply that artistic practice using a VW resembles artistic practice in the physical world, just as a painter works differently from a sculptor.

the artist may use any of the possibilities of the VW, from scripting and building to communicating.

if code instructions are used, and they proceed from ideas about art, the result is not a script or program.

the space of a VW is a representation of social space.

the spectator acts as participant in art that uses VWs as medium.

art in VWs has to be perceived in its genuine form to be fully appreciated.

these sentences express my personal opinion.
